If you are looking for a top-notch optometry practice, we know you will be very happy with the services and care that you receive at our office, Clermont Family Eyecare. Our optometrist in Claremont, Dr. Samantha Love, will be able to screen you for macular degeneration - a serious and possibly vision-threatening eye disease.
Macular degeneration is an eye disease which can severely impact vision over the years. There are different types of macular degeneration including dry macular degeneration, and a wet form of macular degeneration. With early detection and treatment, our optometrist in Clermont can help you to manage this potentially sight-stealing disease. Today there is even genetic testing for macular degeneration. In fact, there is now a genetic test that can predict how a patient who has been diagnosed with macular degeneration will progress. This test is for patients who have already been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration. This test is used for patients who are both at low risk for vision loss in the future, and for those who have a medium or high risk for severe vision loss. In order for a patient to take this test, the inside of the patient’s cheek will be swabbed using a brush. The swab is then sent to the genetic testing company where it is analyzed. This test is good for people who have been recently diagnosed with dry age-related macular degeneration. Even patients who are close relatives of the person diagnosed with macular degeneration may choose to be tested. If you are found by the testing to be at high risk for losing vision, you may be able to alter your habits so that you will have less risk of this occurring. Changes in nutrition may be helpful in lessening the effects of the disease. Additionally, microcurrent therapy can be used on certain patients. The genetic test is about 80% accurate.
